Chapter Fourteen

Two weeks later

Mallory groaned. How could she possibly have thought this was the answer to all of her problems?

Sequestered in one of the section’s central London facilities, she and Baxter were training. In their line of work, training actually covered many, many bases. As a covert government department which didn’t fit into a neat little box, and with minimal personnel, they had to be versatile. At some point, she guessed, Baxter would be sent to an assessment centre for psychometric aptitude tests and vetting—stuff she couldn’t possibly do. Nor would she want to. And surely they’d have to bend the rules in terms of vetting—wouldn’t being an ex-criminal immediately raise red flags, otherwise? Following that, he’d then be sent to a military base on the south coast to work on decision making, problem solving, working alone and as part of a team, identifying targets, surveillance, counter-surveillance, communications, dead-letter drops, agent handling, personal security, cover stories and much more.

Wesley hadn’t said as much, but she suspected the idea was that she got to decide whether Baxter was even suitable to be sent to the assessment centre and then the base. If she didn’t believe he was good enough, or simply wasn’t right for the job, then they’d save much-needed funds by not sending him for needless training off-site.

So for now, they were sticking with the relatively simple stuff, which Mallory could help out with. They were currently working out—their physical fitness and abilities were just as important as their mental ones. She herself hit the gym, went running or sparred with one of her colleagues every opportunity she got—not always possible when on a mission, but otherwise, a high priority—but whether a Cambridge-educated diamond thief could keep up with her remained to be seen. If he couldn’t, then he’d be kicked out. What would happen to him then, she had no idea.

Would Wesley withdraw the offer and leave him open to the mercy of the legal system and possible retribution from the rest of the gang? They’d definitely want to get their revenge, particularly since Baxter had, by now, told her section everything he knew, allowing them to put his ex-buddies in prison for a very long time.

She couldn’t worry about the future too much, however. Her present was doing a damn good job of getting her riled up as it was. Even with headphones in, workout music blaring, and her going hell for leather on the treadmill, she was still incredibly aware of Baxter’s every move on the cross-trainer he’d hopped onto after a quick warm up. The mirrors on each wall of the compact but well-equipped gym meant there was no getting away from him—not unless she closed her eyes. And given she didn’t want to end up face-planting the machine, or tumbling right off it, that wasn’t an option.

Therefore, she was forced to endure the sight of Baxter, in his tight white T-shirt and black shorts, getting all hot and sweaty, his muscles tensing and flexing. As
